Why do I need to use Sunscreen in the Winter?

As temperatures get cooler and the days get shorter, it may surprise some that the need for Sun Protection does not decrease. For individuals who are active in outdoor Winter activities, Ultraviolet Light becomes an even bigger issue as the Sun’s rays reflect upwards off of ice and snow, giving a “double-dose” of UV exposure in the same time frame. Adequate eye protection also becomes a necessity as the source of incoming light shifts from “top-down” only to “bottom-up”, as well. Don’t forget your sunglasses in your Beach Bag!

For some, exposure to harmful Ultraviolet Light remains at the same level as in the warmer months. For many, exposure to High Energy Visible (HEV)/Blue Light actually increases as we spend more time indoors in close proximity to tablets, computer, television, and Smartphone screens, as well as LED lights.

HEV/Blue Light actually affects our skin on a deeper level than Ultraviolet Light. It causes Oxidative Stress to skin cells and promotes the production of free radicals which, in turn, can cause the skin to appear dull, lifeless, and uneven. These free radicals also accelerate the appearance of wrinkles and can cause hyper-pigmentation (darkspots). Herein lies the importance of year-round protection against both UV and HEV radiation to maintain healthy, young-looking skin, both for your face and body.
